Affordable Housing For Kiwis

We’re providing innovative and helpful solutions to help families get into their own homes.

Here For You

We are here to work with families looking for affordable housing. Initially we have focussed on shifting houses from the Red Zone to create the first batch of affordable homes. The houses we relocate and renovate are high quality timber frame construction homes which we transform into wonderful family homes.

While we are reworking this website we are  closely following  current Affordable Housing discussions. Our Facebook page has links to various aspects of these.  You do not have to be a Facebook user to access it.

We have had 2 “new home” celebrations recently.

The first was  at Ottawa road where we were very happy to have our Patron, Governor General of New Zealand, Sir Jerry Mateparae,  in Christchurch to officially open a house which  has been moved from  Kingsford Street, in  what is now the Red Zone, transformed and is now ready for its new life as a family home in Ottawa road.

The second was for the house which Remy and Romy are now living in with their family. This house was shifted from 144 Queensbury Street, turned round a bit has a new life in Mcbratneys road.  The gathering included the previous owners of the site who were very  keen to celebrate a new family  moving onto their old space.

HOW IT WORKS

There’s any number of ways we can work with you. Typically we can help find you a house in the Red Zone and a suitable section elsewhere to move it to. We would typically manage all the major aspects of the transfer and renovation with the families taking on things like painting and decoration to keep costs down. Alternatively, if you already have section and the people to handle the works we can help find suitable red zoned properties for your project. The Trust is negotiating with mortgage brokers and local banks so that they can participate in the process of supporting families on low incomes into their own their own homes. At the end of the process you will have a fabulous, high quality and affordable home that your family will be proud of.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

At this stage the primary focus of the Trust is to help people in the Canterbury region as this where the need is most critical and were we have resource to address the issues. We have no plans to work outside of Canterbury at this stage. However, this is not to say this can not happen or will not happen in the future.

NOT FOR PROFIT

First and foremost CHT is here for the community and is not-for-profit. This means that all funds in the trust are put into developing affordable housing. CHT intends playing an active role in the city addressing many of the current housing issues, with land subdivision and building techniques, funding packages or support structures for families as they work toward owning their own homes. We think there’s a role for a community-based honest broker working with all sectors. The solution to affordable housing is a complex one and will require relooking at all current structures and searching for new ways of getting families in their own homes.

DO YOU HAVE A SECTION TO SELL?

CHT is looking for sections to purchase in Christchurch. We are especially interested in sections in Aranui, Wainoni and Linwood. However we will consider sections in other areas. When you approach us remember that our commitment is to work with families to set them up in houses which are affordable. If you would like to talk to us about selling a section then please contact us.

“Kia Ora,

I am delighted to be Patron of the Community Housing Trust. The dream of a home of your own has long been important for New Zealanders.  We all need a turangawaewae – a place to stand tall and this Trust will help people realise that dream. Good luck to the Community Housing Trust. I will follow its progress with great interest.”

Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, GNZM, QSO Recent Governor-General of New Zealand
